A TESTIMONIAL: "Whether you are a student, an amateur or a professional Amy Porter's class is a transformational experience. The combination of yoga, the incomparable movement therapist Jerry Schwiebert and Amy's incredible gifts as a flutist and teacher will help you discover your hidden potential and move past issues in your playing that you may have believed you could never overcome. Auditors participate in yoga classes and sessions with master movement therapist Jerry Schwiebert as well as sitting in on masterclasses with Ms. Porter and the special guest.
I teach yoga at the class and come away transformed and inspired after just auditing the other sessions! I also experienced a pain-free season! I can't reccommend this wonderful class enough. Come make a breakthrough in your playing and your life in this supportive, holistic class. The most gifted performers have a relationship with their body that gives them the freedom to express all the components of music with ease. I know that we can all find that relationship with our own bodies. Come see what you can become!"

Comments from the 2008 Workshop with guest Thomas Robertello
From the 2008 Workshop:
" Thank you for having such a wonderful workshop last week. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed myself, and how much I learned. Your compassion, enthusiasm, and knowledge created an atmosphere of non-competitiveness, acceptance, and safeness. I know my colleagues and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the workshop. I know you were worried about it overwhelming us, but I thought that it was amazing and not too much at all! I loved the variety of classes that you brought us, and the personnel were fantastic. Yoga every morning was a new experience for me that I intend to continue. It truly improved my playing! I also loved the combination of the anatomy and sound. Jerry worked wonders and helped me fix a back problem that has been plaguing me for a very long time. I cannot tell you the amount of gratitude that I have for you and all your colleagues. One of the most important things that I learned was from Mr. Robertello. He made me remember why I play music. As you put it, "the flute is easy. Music is not." Yes I play the flute, but the music is why I play it. The flute is just my means of getting to the music. Your workshop reminded me of that. Thank you again so much. "

Comments from the 2007 Workshop with guest Brad Garner

"I attended your Anatomy of Sound class in June as an auditor and I wanted to let you know how much I really enjoyed the entire program. It really helped me start to think very differently about the body/sound connection. I loved Laura’s yoga classes and Jerry’s “presentations”. I also enjoyed Dr Garner’s classes - I was inspired by the story of his illness and how he has come back, and enjoyed his other stories and advice. One thing that really stood out that he said was the caution about relying too much on recordings to judge how a piece should be played, since recordings are editing miracles, rather than performing ones: that when a musician performs live, he/she is competing against the last recording made in terms of that illusionary quality “perfection”. The recitals were wonderful – it was so great to hear all that wonderful flute music. I have dusted off the Gaubert Fantaisie after many years and have discovered that I really like it now. It seems to like me better too.
Your program also served for me as a real springboard for another program I attended just a couple of weeks ago in California: Amy Likar’s Body Mapping class. I discovered the class right when I got back from yours and signed up, because I really felt that now I wanted to understand more about the anatomy and physiology behind our body movement. What was great is that along with body mapping, there were classes in Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais. For someone like me, it was a very compact and convenient way to get a lot of information in a short amount of time. I found that this class really flowed or maybe built on what I learned in yours, so basically I am feeling very “flute empowered” at this point!!!"

Comments from the 2006 Anatomy of Sound with guest András Adorján
"The Anatomy of Sound was the most significant workshop I have ever been to. It changed my perspective of how to use the body while playing the flute, and I learned an incredible amount that has helped me practice and perform more successfully. Amy Porter is the most inspiring teacher I have ever met and Jerry Schwiebert made amazing changes that I didn't know were possible. I will definitely come back to this workshop!"

Comments from the 2005 Anatomy of Sound with guest Jim Walker

"This was my second Anatomy of Sound workshop, and it was just as encouraging and stimulating as the first. Both performers and auditors were made to feel equally welcome and free to participate, and the atmosphere was warm and open. I learned so much more than technical tricks or new tone exercises. This workshop is about artistry and performance practice, and how our body works with us or fights us in the process. I have never attended another masterclass where I left feeling so inspired, so integrated in body, mind, spirit, and so motivated to press on in my musical pursuits. Thank you again!"
"For the second year, I have thoroughly enjoyed the Anatomy of Sound workshop. This has been the most rewarding class I have attended. Not only were Ms. Porter and Mr. Walker very approachable and encouraging, but so were the other flutists in attendance. It was great to be inspired by these two great artists and the other flutists. I feel that I have learned more the second time around and came home very inspired and motivated to the best musician that I can be, not just a flutist."
"I got a lot out of the workshop and look forward to returning this year. The atmosphere was welcoming to all, and the workshop gave me new inspiration and ideas for my own practice as an adult amateur. What I appreciated most of all about the workshop was the fact that these two outstanding teachers, with their accumulated years of expertise, were completely focused on helping each participant improve. To me, that's the essence of teaching, and to see that happening with every participant in every session was very rewarding, not just on a musical level but on a human level as well."

"My first Anatomy of Sound class was extremely fulfilling and well-rounded. Focusing on the connection between the mind, body, and spirit led to stunning improvements in the overall sound and musicianship of players before my very eyes. I felt a great sense of camaraderie amongst all players involved and both Amy Porter and Jim Walker were very interested in the growth of each individual. I also found Jerry Schweibert to be invaluable for his knowledge of how the body can both inhibit and enhance the mechanics of flute playing. On top of all this, the class was organized and well-run. I had a great experience."
"The Anatomy of Sound Workshop has been a very special experience for
me. The musical concepts that I was introduced to eight months ago are
still helpful and influential in my personal growth and development as
a musician. I loved the non-competitive atmosphere and had fun hanging
out with different flutists from around North America! (I'm from
Canada!!)"

Comments from the 2004 Anatomy of Sound with guest Jeanne Baxtresser
Comments from Auditors and Performers at the 2004 Workshop:
"I thought that the application/ regestration process was really organized. I also thought that all the classes were organized as well, it was really structured, and you could tell that a great deal of time was spent in making the schedule. The atmosphere was wonderful, it was amazingly supportive and extremely friendly. I am still shocked that I only knew those people for 4 days, it certainly felt like longer. I never in my wildest dreams thought that I would feel amazingly comfortable having lunch, dinner, and practicing with people from Curtis, Juilliard, Japan, and Canada, and this workshop made that possible. I really don't think anything can be improved, simply because it was sooo good. I would certainly recommend this workshop to others, and already have. I have been to summer festivals, some lasting 2 weeks and some lasting 6 weeks, and I can honestly say that this 4 day workshop is the best summer program I have been to."
"Let me say that I really enjoyed the class and felt that a tremendous amount of
useful information was presented. It was exactly what I needed right now and
I came home feeling both inspired and motivated."
"The tone was set immediately at the orientation. Even an old dog like me felt at home! As a teacher, I appreciated all of the attention paid to professionalism throughout the class and I thought that all of the instructors worked hard to make this class 'non-competitive'. Absolutely the right message to send to the young players in attendance and it really worked."
"The content, the teaching style of all the instructors involved, but especially the absolutely beautiful playing in all of the demonstrations by Ms. Porter and Ms. Baxtresser. The whole topic that was addressed in this class is so interesting and important--it is really great to see a class that focuses on these elements, especially one taught by such interesting"

"I would definitely recommend the class to other people. I loved the fact that it was an open forum and we were allowed to ask questions. I thought each class was very well structured and stuck to it's goal, meaning the excerpts class is where I learned the most about excerpts and the anatomy of sound class I learned most about body/sound."
"As I couldn't understand English sometimes, everyone was so friendly. So I really appreciated your considering . I wish I come back to Michigan next year! Thank you very much!"
